Getting to Ko Samui

Samui Guide

Getting to Ko Samui

There are two ways. Fly directly into Samui International Airport (USM) — Bangkok Airways, Scoot and Chengdu Airlines run more than 30 flights a day, direct from Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore, Hong Kong, Chiang Mai, U-Tapao and Krabi. Or fly to Surat Thani on the mainland and take a ferry, which sails morning and afternoon and takes two and a half hours. The airport is 15 minutes from Chaweng Beach; the ferry piers are about an hour.

Flying direct

Samui airport is small, open-sided and rather lovely — you walk off the plane into a garden. It is also privately owned, which is why fares are higher than you might expect. Book early.

More than 30 flights a day arrive from Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore, Hong Kong, Chiang Mai, U-Tapao and Krabi. From the airport to Chaweng Buri is fifteen minutes.

Flying to Surat Thani, then the ferry

Materially cheaper, and about three hours longer door to door. Fly into Surat Thani, take the bus to the pier, then the ferry. Morning and afternoon sailings, two and a half hours on the water.

Worth it if you are travelling on a budget or you like boats. Less worth it with small children and a lot of luggage.
