The Big Buddha
Wat Phra Yai — the Big Buddha — is a 12-metre gold Buddha on a small islet off Samui's north coast, joined to the island by a causeway. Around 80 steps flanked by dragon balustrades lead up to the platform, which has views across the water. It is free, open all day, and takes about an hour. It is 20 minutes by car from Chaweng Beach.
Twelve metres of gold Buddha, sitting on an islet you reach by causeway. It is the island’s most photographed thing, and it earns it — particularly in the late afternoon when the light comes off the water.
Going
Twenty minutes by car from Chaweng. Free. Open all day, best early or late to avoid both the heat and the tour buses.
Cover your shoulders and knees. It is a working temple. Sarongs are lent at the entrance if you have come straight from the beach.
While you are there
There is a second temple, Wat Plai Laem, five minutes away — an eighteen-armed Guanyin over a lake, far less visited and arguably more beautiful. Go to both.
Around the base of the Big Buddha are stalls selling refreshments and, oddly and wonderfully, life-size figures welded from scrap motorcycle parts.
