Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park
Yes — it is the best day trip from Ko Samui. Mu Ko Ang Thong is an archipelago of 42 limestone islands about 21 miles west of Samui, covering 102 sq km of which only 18 is land. The highlights are the viewpoint climb on Ko Wua Talap, the hidden emerald lagoon on Ko Mae Ko, and kayaking among the limestone stacks. Boats leave Samui in the morning and return late afternoon.
Forty-two limestone islands rising out of pale green water, most of them uninhabited. It is the landscape people picture when they picture Thailand, and it is an hour and a half from the beach in front of the resort.
What you actually do
Ko Wua Talap — the viewpoint climb. It is steep, roped in places, and about half an hour up. The view over the whole archipelago is the photograph everyone comes for. Wear proper shoes; flip-flops will defeat you.
Ko Mae Ko — the hidden lagoon, a near-perfect circle of emerald seawater inside a collapsed limestone dome. You view it from a platform. You cannot swim in it.
Kayaking — the best part, if the sea is calm. Paddling among the stacks at water level gives you the scale of the place.
Practicalities
Trips run daily in season and take the whole day. The park closes in bad weather, most often in November. Ask us at reception and we will arrange it.
